Hugelkultur ... 30yr self-sustaining garden

EndOfTheRoadFamily on Jun 9, 2011

We're trying our hand at Hugelkultur. Take large logs and branches and place them in mounds or piles. Then cover the piles with any soil amendments you need and a good layer of manure. Cover with dirt and plant into them. The logs hold moisture, produce a little heat (compost), and give off nutrients into the soil. We layed the piles in this case, on the conture so the water moves accross the property and through the piles where it will be absorbed.

I FORGOT to mention that these piles should have manure on them before you bury them. You can plant in them right away but the first year you should water them until they can absorb the water they need through the winter, or wet season.

Paul Wheaton has a good description of it here;http://www.richsoil.com/hugelkultur/
